View Resource Widening the Road in a Tropical Country with Scale

This photo was taken in 2009 after a mountain road had been widened. The small layer of soil supporting the diverse tropical rainforest is observable. The road was widened from a single car road to a road that could easily handle two-way traffic and up to three cars in some areas. View Resource A Tributary Enters the Stream

A tributary to the Turure River enters the main stream. The tributary (in the center of the photo) runs below the road cut. The main part of the stream (along the bottom of the photo) comes from an undeveloped area. One can observe the difference in sediment levels. The main part of the stream flows from the left of the photo to the right.

View Resource Pool 17 along the Turure River in 2005

This picture was taken in 2005 along the Turure River before the mountain road had been widened. It contains one of the researchers for scale. The researcher is up to his knees in the pool, less than 2 feet deep. The pool is above his waist (more than 3 feet) closer to the rocks along the far bank. The stream flows from the left of the photograph to the right.

View Resource Pool 17 along the Turure River in 2009

Picture of Pool 17 taken in 2009 along the Turure River after the mountain road had been widened. To get to the rocks along the far bank in 2005, one had to wade in waist-deep (about 3 feet) water. Now, one can simply walk across and only get wet shoes. The tripod in the photograph is only four inches on its side, half of which is above the water level. In 2005, the bottom of the stream was...
