Issues in Ecology, Issue 12: Impacts of Atmospheric Pollution on Aquatic Ecosystems
This report discusses the three primary categories of atmospheric pollutants of aquatic ecosystems and how their ecological effects impact humans, fish and wildlife. Pollutants of concern such as organic compounds, synthetic fragrances, fluorinated surfactants, flame retardants, mercury, and nutrients are reviewed. The emission, deposition, and fate of atmospheric pollutants are discussed; in addition to ecological responses such as bioaccumulation and biomagnification. The history of organochlorine chemicals and their devastating effects, as well as new chemicals of concern are compared. Recommendations for the regulation and monitoring of atmospheric pollutants of aquatic ecosystems are listed. Issues in Ecology is an ongoing series of reports designed to present major ecological issues in an easy-to-read manner. This Issue summarizes the consensus of a panel of scientific experts based on the information that was current and available at the time of its publication in 2004.
